Experience INO’s acclaimed 2021 production of Elektra, filmed on location in the Castle Yard, Kilkenny. Strauss’s electrifying opera will be screened outdoors as part of Kilkenny Arts Festival.
Ambition, greed, betrayal, cruelty and revenge flow through Agamemnon’s family in this epic Greek myth. Relationships mediated through murder. The eponymous heroine left to eat with the dogs. Elektra is an opera steeped in derangement and blood lust.
With searing vocal lines and orchestra aflame, Strauss pushes the boundaries of his musical art to depict the psychological distress of a world in which it’s anyone normal who stands out as strange.
Presented where it was originally filmed—beside the majestic Kilkenny Castle—this special screening offers a rare chance to experience Irish National Opera’s acclaimed 2021 production in a bold, cinematic form. Directed by Conall Morrison, with a commanding central performance by Giselle Allen and conducted by Fergus Sheil. Featuring the Irish National Opera Orchestra and Chorus.
