Out of the Ordinary

Welcome to Out of the Ordinary, an exciting new Virtual Reality Community Opera project working with communities in Inis Meáin, Tallaght and rural Ireland.

Out of the Ordinary is being created in rural Ireland, on Inis Meáin, and in Tallaght and South County Dublin by groups of people who are turning experiences that matter to them into an opera. Director Jo Mangan and composer Finola Merivale have been working with them since last year. And the cream of Irish virtual reality expertise will also be on hand to realise their vision and transform it into a unique virtual reality experience.

In creation now for presentation to locations around Ireland in Summer 2022.

Events and Activity

Irish National Opera ran a series of online workshops with communities around Tallaght, South Dublin and Inis Meáin as well as with teenagers living in rural Ireland in the first half of 2021. These workshops explored the creative pillars of opera, text, music and design, in an effort to facilitate the co-creation of our VR community opera.

We are now in the development phase of Out of the Ordinary where professional and non-professional artists are working together to co-create the opera in a series of in person and online creative development sessions.

Meet the Team

The Out of the Ordinary creative team brings together some of the foremost artists working with virtual reality technologies in Ireland today. Irish director, Jo Mangan is a leading expert in creative storytelling with experience in site specific theatre and VR performance art. Irish composer Finola Merivale, has been chosen to compose the opera because of her experience in electro-acoustic music and her specific interest in VR as a new medium for operatic expression. Creative production studio Algorithm will complete the creative team with their unique approach to incorporating cutting-edge technology in the creation of stunning visual experiences.

Irish National Opera's Studio and Outreach Producer James Bingham and Project Administrator Paddy Jo Malpas are working hard to create and deliver valuable workshops for our communities. If you have any questions about the project or how you can get involved you can get in touch with Paddy Jo via email here.
