Biography
Irish soprano Giselle Allen’s recent highlights include Anna Maurrant in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene at her artistic home, Opera North, where she also appeared in the title role in a new production of Puccini’s Tosca. At Welsh National Opera she she received outstanding reviews as Magda Sorel in Menotti’s The Consul. She has appeared with RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra as Minnie in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West. Past success with Opera North include Mila in Janáček’s Osud and Santuzza Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana as part of The Little Greats, a series of six short operas presented on tour in the UK; she also sang the title role in Strauss’s Salome in concert at The Sage, Gateshead, garnering the admiration of colleagues and audience alike. Other career highlights include Ellen Orford in Britten’s Peter Grimes at Bergen International Festival under the baton of Ed Gardner, a role she previously sang at Opera North, Berlin’s Komische Oper and in the renowned 2013 Snape Maltings production on the beach at Aldeburgh (broadcast on BBC4 and released on DVD); and the roles of Gutrune, Gerhilde and Freia in Wagner’s Ring cycle in the celebrated Opera North production of 2016, which toured the UK and was broadcast live on BBC4. This year, she appeared as Miss Jessell in a celebrated new production by Andrea Breth of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw streamed and recorded for future release on DVD at La Monnaie in Brussels. She makes her INO debut as Elektra.
