Rehearsed Reading:
Le Roi s’amuse

Experience the drama that inspired Verdi's iconic Rigoletto. Join Irish National Opera and Alliance Française de Dublin on Thursday 21st November for a unique, rehearsed reading of Le roi s’amuse, Victor Hugo's daring play about power and betrayal—originally banned in France after just one performance.

The tale of a court jester who becomes a victim of his own machinations inspired Verdi and his librettists to create a work that was an instant hit when it premiered in 1851 and still is one of the most popular Italian operas. Victor Hugo’s play never reached the same level of acclaim. A stinging criticism of François I, King of France, Le roi s’amuse was banned after just one performance. The play was rehabilitated for the celebrations for Hugo’s 80th birthday in 1882, but never entered the repertoire of French theatre or gained popularity.

Irish National Opera and Alliance Française are delighted to present a rehearsed reading of highlights from Le roi s’amuse presented by Alliance Française Dublin and Lycée Français International Samuel Beckett drama clubs and directed by Martha Fitzgerald. This is a rare opportunity to hear Hugo’s text performed.
