We are thrilled to announce that Hansel and Gretel, a co-production with Theatre Lovett and the Abbey Theatre, has won the award for 'Best Opera - overall theatrical experience' at the Irish Times Theatre Awards.

The prestigious Irish Times Theatre Awards took place Sunday evening,12 June 2022, celebrating two years of outstanding theatre in Ireland. Irish National Opera was proud to receive 7 nominations, with Hansel and Gretel winning the award for 'Best Opera'.

Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel premiered in February 2020 at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin before heading on a nationwide tour across Ireland. The tour finished up on 7 March 2020 just before the onslaught of the COVID-19 outbreak in Ireland. We are very grateful that our audiences got to experience this magic opera which critics described as "sublime" (The Arts Review), "thoroughly enjoyable" (No More Workhorse) and “humorous and entertaining” (Bachtrack).

No one could have predicted the difficult two years that were to follow for the arts and for the country as a whole. However, the breadth of work which was presented at the awards ceremony on Sunday evening demonstrates the determination and innovation of the Irish Arts Sector.

We would like to extend a huge congratulations to the Hansel and Gretel team, our co-producers Theatre Lovett and Abbey Theatre and to all the nominees and winners of the Irish Times Theatre Awards 2022.
