Tom Creed


Tom has previously directed Vivaldi’s Griselda and Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann for Irish National Opera, both of which were nominated for Best Opera Production at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards.

He has developed and staged world premieres of Donnacha Dennehy’s The Hunger (Abbey Theatre and BAM, New York), Annelies van Parys’s Private View (Opera Vlaanderen, Operadagen Rotterdam, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and on tour), and Jürgen Simpson’s air india [redacted] (Turning Point Ensemble, Vancouver). Other productions include Britten’s Owen Wingrave (Opéra National de Paris, Opera Collective Ireland), Handel’s Acis and Galatea, Wolf-Ferrari’s Susanna’s Secret and Poulenc’s The Human Voice (Opera Theatre Company). Stravinsky’s Mavra and Walton’s The Bear (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and Stravinsky’s Mavra and Renard (Royal Irish Academy of Music).

Private View was awarded the inaugural FEDORA Rolf Liebermann Prize for Opera in 2014, Best Production at the Armel Opera Festival in Budapest in 2015 and was named by Music Theatre NOW in 2016 as one of 14 notable productions of the last three years, “which are aesthetically innovative and reflect new developments in this genre”. He participated in the Opera Creation Workshop at the 2020 Aix-en-Provence Festival, and is currently developing new operas with composers Emma O’Halloran and Michael Gallen.

In theatre he has worked with the Abbey Theatre, Gate Theatre, Rough Magic, Thisispopbaby, his own company Playgroup, and other Irish companies, which have played in Ireland, the UK, Europe, the USA and Australia. He was previously Festival Director of Cork Midsummer Festival, Theatre and Dance Curator of Kilkenny Arts Festival and Associate Director of Rough Magic. He is a board member of Theatre Forum and GAZE Film Festival, and is on the steering committee of the National Campaign for the Arts.
