Madama ButterflyBiography
British character tenor Peter Van Hulle read music at Leeds University, furthering his studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the National Opera Studio. He made his debut for Irish National Opera as Valzacchi in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. Other recent operatic engagements include his house debut last season at the Staatsoper Stuttgart as Gustav von Aschenbach in Britten’s Death in Venice, a role he also sang for Welsh National Opera (together with Hotel Porter) as part of the company’s award-winning 2024 production, alongside his debut for Glyndebourne Touring Opera as Parpignol/Death in Puccini’s La bohème, and a return to West Green House as Bardolfo in Verdi’s Falstaff. His current and future plans include a return to Diva Opera as Don Basilio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, touring the UK and France, and his debut at Opera North as the Butcher in David Fennessy’s Pass the Spoon. His other career highlights include Hotel Porter in Death in Venice (La Scala, Milan, La Monnaie/De Munt, Dutch National Opera, English National Opera and WNO), Pang in Puccini’s Turandot, Snout in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Shepherd in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde (all ENO), Der Narr in Berg’s Wozzeck (ENO and BBCSSO), Charles Lamb in Sally Beamish’s Monster , Rector in Britten’s Peter Grimes , Schoolmaster in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Monostatos in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Goro in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Tchaplitsky in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, Dr Caius in Verdi’s Falstaff and First Brother in Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins (all Scottish Opera), and Sir Bruno Robertson in Bellini’s I Puritani and Valzacchi in Der Rosenkavalier (Welsh National Opera).
