Biography

Peter Joyce is a member of the Irish National Opera Studio in 2025/26 and was assistant conductor for Verdi’s Rigoletto, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore for INO. He studied music at Trinity College Dublin and Cork School of Music, and continued his musical education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, graduating with honours in 2024. First Prize and Orchestra Prize Winner at the 2023 Feis Ceoil Conducting Competition, Peter Joyce has worked in symphonic, musical theatre, choral settings and opera. He made his conducting debut in the Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein with the Vienna University Philharmonic. Peter has also worked with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic Białystok, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Pro-Arte Orchestra Vienna, Orchestra of the Technical University Vienna, Max Brand Ensemble, Ensemble Ars Nova, the Webern Ensemble and the Webern Chamber Choir. He is founder and conductor of the Esker Festival Orchestra, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2023 with performances of Mahler’s Second Symphony. As well as performing and conducting world premieres by emerging composers, Peter’s own compositions have been performed by ensembles such as the Arditti Quartet, Platypus Ensemble, and Crash Ensemble, and at festivals including Wien Modern. In 2020 he won the Feis Ceoil IMRO Composition Award and in 2025 was a finalist in the Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition. Most recently, Peter’s work was chosen by Crash Ensemble and New Music Dublin for inclusion in the Crash Works Residency 2026/27.
