Named “a born bel canto tenor” by the New York Times, Guatemalan tenor Mario Chang returns to Irish National Opera, having previously sung Alfredo Germont in Verdi’s La traviata in 2024. Recent highlights include Rodolfo in Puccini’s La bohème with Scottish Opera, Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata with Palm Beach Opera and the Seiji Ozawa Music Festival, and Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca with Municipal de Santiago. At the Metropolitan Opera New York he has performed Arcadio in Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas, Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, the Italian Tenor in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, and Arturo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. Additional engagements include Ismaele in Verdi’s Nabucco at Los Angeles Opera, the title role in Massenet’s Werther with Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, and the Duke in Verdi’s Rigoletto at Norwegian National Opera. Orchestral appearances feature Verdi’s Requiem with the San Francisco Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic, alongside Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the San Francisco Symphony. A First Prize winner of the 2014 Operalia and 2011 Francisco Viñas Competitions, Mario is an alumnus of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and The Juilliard School. He is the founder of Querido Arte Opera de Guatemala, his country’s first opera company.
