Jakob Mahase

Biography

Jakob Mahase is an Irish bass-baritone who joins the Irish National Opera as a Studio Artist for the 2026/27 season. He recently completed his Master’s in Vocal Performance at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, studying with acclaimed bass Kurt Rydl and Professor Sebastian Vitucci. His vibrant, powerful voice spans repertoire from Mozart to Wagner. Jakob has performed extensively across Ireland, the UK, the USA, Austria and Germany. Highlights include Guglielmo in Mozarts Cosi fan tutte with Flatpack Opera, the Sacristan in Puccini's Tosca with North Wales Opera, he performed Krushina in Smetana’s Die verkaufte Braut, Miracle in Offenbach's Les contes d’Hoffmann, and the title role in Donizetti's Don Pasquale with Opera Bohemia Wien. Jakob has been an Emerging Artist with the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices, a Wagner Scholar with the American Wagner Society, and an Alvarez Young Artist and Associate Artist with Garsington Opera, where he covered and performed Peter Quince in Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Don Fernando in Beethoven’s Fidelio. He has also performed Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni with TU Orchestra Wien and Dancaire in Bizet's Carmen with both the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and Limerick Opera Festival. A semi-finalist in the 2024 Belvedere International Singing Competition, Jakob was also a finalist in London’s Meistersinger Competition, won second prize at the BTHVN Competition and third prize at the Hans Staud Competition. In 2026, Jakob was nam ed an Emerging Artist with Le Foyer des Artistes. He makes his German debut as Sid in Puccini's La fanciulla del West with Theater Bonn.
