Biography

Iurii Samoilov, from Ukraine, is one the most exciting and versatile baritones of his generation. He began his career in 2010 as Plutone in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo directed by Pierre Audi at Amsterdam Stadsschouwburg. Since then he has appeared at some of the most renowned opera houses and festivals, including the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro Real in Madrid, La Monnaie in Brussels, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Salzburg Festival, Semperoper Dresden, Alte Oper Frankfurt and Norwegian National Opera, where he has worked with many of today’s great conductors. Current season highlights include his role debut as Sonora in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West (Cleveland Orchestra), Schaunard in Puccini’s La bohème (Metropolitan Opera), company debuts at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Finnish National Opera and Olympia Theater in Athens. He will also sing in the 2023 New Year’s Eve Concert of the Staatskapelle Dresden under Franz Welser-Möst. Recent engagements include debuts at the Metropolitan Opera and Michigan Opera Theater, BBC Proms, Belcore in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore in Macerata, the title role in Britten’s Billy Budd at the Bolshoi Theater, Slook in Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio and Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia in Pesaro, Masetto in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival and Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Conte di Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro at Semperoper Dresden. He makes his Irish National Opera debut in La bohème.
