Seraglio, the Mini-Series

Biography

Ian Dearden’s recent sound designs for opera include Monteverdi’s Orfeo and The Return of Ulysses (Royal Opera House at the Roundhouse 2015/18), Turnage’s Coraline (Royal Opera House at the Barbican Theatre 2018) and Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus (English National Opera 2019).

He formed Sound Intermedia with David Sheppard in 1996. They have created sound designs for Stockhausen’s Helicopter String Quartet (Birmingham Opera Company 2012), Britten’s Peter Grimes on the Beach (Aldeburgh Productions 2013), Francesconi’s Quartett (Royal Opera House 2014), Dusapin’s Passion and Venables’ Denis & Katya (Music Theatre Wales and London Sinfonietta 2018/19), Opera: Passion, Power and Politics (V&A exhibition 2017), Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers (Historic Royal Palaces 2018). They collaborated with Wide Open Opera on Dennehy’s The Last Hotel and The Second Violinist, and with Irish National Opera on Irvine’s Least Like the Other. Working regularly with the Colin Currie Group performing the work of Steve Reich, they have produced two highly acclaimed albums of his music.

As well as editing and mixing the audio this production of Seraglio the Mini-Series for INO, Ian is sound designing the Drive & Live performances for English National Opera at Alexandra Palace in London - a unique outdoor opera experience in response to the closure of the London Coliseum.
