Northern-Irish mezzo-soprano Carolyn Dobbin trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the young artists’ programme of Opera Theatre Company in Dublin.
In 2010-11 she was Associate Artist at Welsh National Opera and from 2012-14 a member of the Luzerner Theater in Switzerland. Her roles include Mary in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer (Longborough Festival Opera), Penelope in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Annio in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina, the title roles in Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Bizet’s Carmen (Luzerner Theatre), Flora and Annina in Verdi’s La traviata (Stadttheater Bern), Mercédès in Carmen (Welsh National Opera), Janet in Anne Dudley’s The Doctor’s Tale (Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House, London), Scipio in Detlev Glanert’s Caligula and Hannah in Weinberg’s The Passenger(English National Opera). She established the Northern Irish Song Project and recorded the first CD ‘Calen-o’ of songs by composers past and present from the North of Ireland with Iain Burnside Delphian Records and BBC Radio 3 Recitals. She has performed many oratorios by Handel, Verdi, Mozart, Bach with many prestigious orchestras in the UK, Spain and Switzerland. She made her INO debut last February as the Witch in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.
