Biography

German bass Andreas Bauer Kanabas’s repertoire includes Verdi roles such as Philippe II in Don Carlos, Zaccaria in Nabucco, Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra, De Silva in Ernani and Padre Guardiano in La forza del destino, as well as Wagner roles such as King Marke in Tristan und Isolde, King Henry in Lohengrin, Landgrave Hermann in Tannhäuser, Veit Pogner in Die Meistersinger and Daland in Der fliegende Holländer. He also sings Mephisto in Gounod's Faust, the title role in Bartók’s Bluebeard's Castle, Vodnik in Dvořák’s Rusalka, Gremin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, King René in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen and Mozart roles such as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Commendatore in Don Giovanni. He has sung in Vienna, London, Paris, Moscow, Seattle, Tokyo, Munich and at all three opera houses in Berlin. He has been a member of the ensemble at the Frankfurt Opera since 2013. During the global Covid19 shutdown he was lucky enough to perform in Rusalka at the Teatro Real Madrid. Future engagements will bring him back to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Zaccaria in Nabucco and to Antwerp and Ghent as De Silva in Ernani. In addition, debuts at the Hamburg State Opera as Rocco in Beethoven’s Fidelio and Caspar in Weber’s Der Freischütz, as well as Pogner in Die Meistersinger in Tokyo are imminent. In 2015 he sang Eremit in Der Freischütz in a new production of the Semperoper Dresden under the direction of Christian Thielemann.
