Welcome to Out of the Ordinary, an exciting new Virtual Reality Community Opera project working with communities in Inis Meáin, Tallaght and rural Ireland.
Irish National Opera is working with communities in Inis Meáin, Tallaght and rural Ireland to co-create a Virtual Reality Community Opera for presentation in 2022. This project aims to use new methods of participatory art to involve communities in the creative process of opera and provoke an impact on the relationship between opera and digital technology.

Irish National Opera is running a series of online workshops with communities around Tallaght, South Dublin and Inis Meáin as well as teenagers living in rural Ireland. These workshops will explore the creative pillars of opera and allow participants to contribute to the creation of our VR community opera.

The Out of the Ordinary creative team brings together some of the foremost artists working with virtual reality technologies in Ireland today. Irish director, Jo Mangan is a leading expert in creative storytelling with experience in site specific theatre and VR performance art. Irish composer Finola Merivale, has been chosen to compose the opera because of her experience in electro-acoustic music and her specific interest in VR as a new medium for operatic expression. Creative production studio Algorithm will complete the creative team with their unique approach to incorporating cutting-edge technology in the creation of stunning visual experiences.
Irish National Opera's Studio and Outreach Producer James Bingham and Project Administrator Paddy Jo Malpas are working hard to create and deliver valuable workshops for our communities. This work is a part of TRACTION, a European project consisting of 9 international partners, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 initiative. This exciting project brings together experts from the arts, technology and academic sectors to research and develop new technologies and methodologies that engage local communities in opera. Out of the Ordinary is one of three pilot projects that will test these new processes.
