In Conversation With...
In September 2020, INO launched its third year of the ABL Aviation Opera Studio, taking on eight new studio members in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. Whilst such circumstances undoubtably created significant challenges, we have worked hard to produce a busy and successful term of studio events for this season’s artists. Last autumn, studio members took part in a wide variety of activities, including in-person one-to-one coaching sessions with vocal consultant Brenda Hurley and online consultation classes with some of the very best opera artists living and working in Ireland. Practical experience was possible too, with many of our studio artists taking part in our recent commissioning project, 20 Shots of Opera.
As difficult as the last few months have been, the unusual situation we find ourselves in also presents us with great opportunity to engage the wider operatic community and imagine studio activity that otherwise may not have been possible. We ended last year with a series of professional seminars, facilitated by the generosity and commitment of INO artistic partner, Tara Erraught. As Tara explains, ‘In a time when our world is suffering at the hands of a pandemic, when our industry is on its knees, I wanted to show the young artists that our wonderful Classical Music community would rally. Rally around them, around each other and build our industry back up, ready to welcome the young artists with open arms. I am grateful to my amazing colleagues who agreed without hesitation to give their time to speak with us.’
The ‘In Conversation With’ series brings together a collection of world renowned opera professionals to share their experience with our studio artists on a range of topics, from performance to vocal health to presenting yourself in the public eye. This sort of insight is invaluable to young artists as they develop their careers and we are very grateful to Tara and our guest speakers for giving their time so generously, and sharing their experience with this year’s ABL Aviation Opera Studio.
We will be sharing a snapshot of these conversations over the coming weeks via our website and social media, with each of our ABL Aviation Opera Studio artists sharing their own unique takeaways and perspectives on these enlightening encounters. Stay tuned next Tuesday as we share the Kelli-Ann Masterson’s insight into the studio's conversation with vocal health consultant Dr. Paul Kwak.
