Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh’s dark and affecting opera, The Second Violinist, a co-production with Landmark Productions, first burst on to the opera circuit during 2017’s Galway International Arts Festival to rave reviews and critical acclaim. In the 2 years since it premiered it has received 3 more outings in Ireland and abroad, with performances at the Dublin Theatre Festival (October 2017), the Barbican Theatre, London (September 2018) and Dutch National Opera's Opera Forward Festival in Amsterdam (March 2019).

The recipient of the Fedora Generali Prize for Opera in 2017, the work has enjoyed success from the outset and continues to garner professional accolades across the industry. A winner of the Irish Times Theatre Award for best opera, we’re very proud to announce that the opera has been nominated in the ‘opera and musical theatre’ category of the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards, which takes place on 28 November 2019.

Earlier this year, Jamie Vartan’s innovative set design was chosen to be featured at this year’s Prague Quadrennial, the world’s largest scenography event and more recently Jack Phelan (video designer) won the Projection Design category in this year’s Knights of Illumination awards.

It has just been announced that The Second Violinist will make its US premiere at the Armory, New York on September 25 - September 29, 2020. We couldn’t be prouder of the team behind The Second Violinist, and we look forward to more performances next year and beyond.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported this opera including Fedora Platform, Culture Ireland, Barbican Centre and Arts Council Ireland.
