Irish National Opera Hits All the Right Notes for EURO 2020
Dublin City Council appoint Irish National Opera as successful bid in EURO 2020 – Arts Legacy Project
Irish National Opera, in partnership with Dublin City Council, axis arts centre, Ballymun, and the National Concert Hall, announce the world premiere of the EURO 2020 Opera Arts Legacy Project on Sunday 14 June 2020 in the National Concert Hall
As part of the of the EURO 2020 tournament Dublin City Council are supporting a unique Arts Legacy Project awarded to Irish National Opera following a successful open call.
Irish National Opera has commissioned composer Brian Irvine to create a new work celebrating football, inspired by the Dublin football community. INO is partnering with Dublin City Council, the axis arts centre in Ballymun and the National Concert Hall on this ground-breaking world premiere performance on Sunday 14 June 2020.
Brian Irvine, whose recent world premiere for INO Least Like the Other, Searching for Rosemary Kennedy, produced in association with Galway International Arts Festival, was received to great public and critical acclaim, teams up with long term collaborator, writer, director and filmmaker John McIlduff. Together over the next few months they will reach out to Dublin football communities and explore what exactly the game means to them.
The dynamic pair are well known for their vibrant multimedia performances that offer audiences an alternative way to experience an opera. They find the stories that exist in the cracks and shine a light on them. For this EURO 2020 project they will work closely with Dublin’s football communities and discover what makes them tick, searching out a series of stories that will form the core of a live performance in NCH on Sunday 14 June 2020.
Dublin City Council and axis arts centre, Ballymun, will be working with INO to help recruit football and music fans to form the community chorus.
Speaking at the launch - Lord Mayor Paul Mc Auliffe added, “Dublin is incredibly proud to be a Host City of EURO 2020, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for this City and the people of Dublin. We’re thrilled to showcase Dublin to the world and make this a memorable tournament for all fans. Not only will EURO 2020 leave a lasting football legacy in the City, but we are delighted to partner with Irish National Opera in realising this unique and inclusive music programme. It opens up EURO 2020 to a whole new audience, and I’d invite anyone with a musical interest to apply for a chance to take to the stage in the iconic National Concert Hall”.
Composer Brian Irvine explains “We are thrilled to be involved in this project because it allows us to embark on a journey to examine and explore the parallels between football and singing - both profoundly group activities, both about individuals and communities, about doing, about lateral thinking, about expressing who we are and about making goals of many different kinds. And in that exploration I feel that we will make something that will open up the world of opera and the world of football to reveal something that we all understand and recognise as wonderful”.
This bespoke piece of music originating from the experiences of football’s most passionate supporters, will be performed by members of the newly formed community chorus and accompanied by a full orchestra under the baton of INO’s Artistic Director Fergus Sheil. “It is part of our core philosophy,” Sheil explains, “to reach new audiences, including people who might not yet have engaged with opera in the context of the opera house. We believe this project offers an excellent opportunity to do just that”.
This one-off concert performance will give our newly formed community chorus the opportunity to perform with an orchestra for a live audience, sharing their love for football and translating this passion into a compelling and rewarding musical experience.
Project Manager James Bingham adds “no experienced required, if you are interested in football and singing, and would like to take part, do get in touch. Don’t miss your chance to take to the stage in NCH and sing as part of this special EURO 2020 celebration”.
