INO Jukebox Live on World Opera Day
Irish National Opera announces collaboration with Facebook to celebrate World Opera Day on Friday 25 October
Irish National Opera joins forces with three of the world’s main opera associations, Opera Europa, OPERA America and Ópera Latino américa to celebrate a new global initiative, the first ever World Opera Day. This new universal day of opera celebration observes and honours the value of opera in peoples’ everyday lives. The free INO Jukebox Live event will be performed by six young singers in front of an invited audience in Facebook HQ and simultaneously live-streamed worldwide via Facebook on Friday 25 October.
The date chosen for World Opera Day is no coincidence as 25 October is the birthday of both Georges Bizet and Johann Strauss II, two of the world's most famous opera and operetta composers. Building on the legacy of these popular and accessible composers, INO’s Jukebox Live will offer the audience a chance to choose any aria from the extensive opera menu - aria, duet or ensemble - and enjoy it performed live by young opera stars of the future.
Live opera is a uniquely exhilarating experience and is one of the most emotionally direct of all artforms. And interestingly one of the most familiar. Opera forms part of our popular consciousness, even those who have never attended an opera or listened to a recording, have heard it countless times in other forms, on ads, film and TV sound-tracks and sports anthems. The INO Jukebox Live will give online viewers in Ireland and around the world, a chance to discover the source, to enjoy the original in a live music experience.
Speaking about INO Jukebox Live Artistic Director Fergus Sheil says: “For World Opera Day we are taking opera out of the theatre and performing in a more unexpected context. We are delighted to partner with Facebook so that we can bring live opera to one of Dublin’s major technology companies, but also through Facebook to reach a wider national and global audience. We will showcase some of Ireland’s brightest operatic talents singing much-loved opera excerpts for the enjoyment of all audiences. It’s a moment to celebrate all that is great about opera.”
Irish National Opera is delighted to be involved in this first World Opera Day. The initiative’s core mission to improve access and build inclusivity is closely aligned and reflects INO’s commitment to developing audiences by presenting exciting, inclusive and accessible opera.
INO Jukebox Live throws open the opera experience to anyone who is interested in joining in - it is equally accessible to those around the globe who have logged into INO’s live stream as it is to those in the room, there are no price or location barriers in force. The company is also pleased to partner with Facebook who host the INO Jukebox Live event in their iconic HQ in Dublin’s Grand Canal Dock.
