By David Salazar

The Irish National Opera is opening its first ever season starting on Jan. 9, 2018 with a gala concert.

From there the company will showcase its first opera of the season on Feb. 24 when it kicks things off with Thomas Adès’ “Powder Her Face.”

That will be followed by Patrick Mason’s new staging of “The Marriage of Figaro”, which will star Tara Erraught, Jonathan Lemalu, Ben McAteer, Máire Flavin, and Suzanne Murphy. This will be the company’s first full production which will open on April 13, 2018 at Wexford’s National Opera House. Then it will head to the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin for four performances on April 17, 18, 20, and 21.

Between July 23 and 29, the company will present Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” with mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty in the title role. Emma Martin directs.

Then the company turns to a revival of Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh’s “The Second Violinist” at the Barbican Theatre. The production runs between Sept. 6 and 8.

Between Sept. 14 and Oct. 16, “The Tales of Hoffman” will take to the stage in a production by Tom Creed. That will be followed by “Bluebeard’s Castle” which bows on Oct. 12, 13, and 14. “Aida” closes things out with four performances on Nov. 24, 27, and 29, and Dec. 1. Orla Boylan takes on the title role and Gwyn Hughes Jones plays Radamès.

The company also hinted that it would be looking to present Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” sometime in the near future.
