Biography

Award-winning Scottish director Paul Curran graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney in 1992. From 2007 to 2012 he was Artistic Director of the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo. Among his productions are Rossini’s La donna del lago (Metropolitan Opera New York); Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride (Royal Opera, Covent Garden); Dvorak’s Rusalka (Oslo, New National Theatre Tokyo); Wagner’s Tannhäuser (La Scala); Britten’s Peter Grimes (Kennedy Centre Washington DC, Oslo, Santa Fe, Savonlinna Festival); Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde (La Fenice, Venice, BBC Symphony Orchestra); Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer (Maggio Musicale Florence, Ekaterinburg); Puccini’s Tosca (Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg, Canadian Opera, Norwegian National Opera Oslo); Verdi’s La traviata (Bucharest, Opera Philadelphia); Bizet’s Carmen (Opera Philadelphia, Seattle Opera); Verdi’s Il trovatore (Bologna, Tokyo, Turin); Britten’s A Midsummer Night's Dream (Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro di San Carlo, Naples, Central City Opera, Pittsburgh).

His other productions include Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel (Santa Fe Opera, The Dallas Opera); My Fair Lady (Teatro di San Carlo Naples), Britten’s Death in Venice (Garsington Opera); Strauss’s Daphne (Teatro La Fenice, Venice); Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos (Vlaamse Opera, Teatro La Fenice, Venice); Massenet’s Chérubin (Teatro Lirico di Cagliari); Verdi’s Otello (Welsh National Opera, Canadian Opera); Verdi’s I Lombardi alla prima crociata (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino); Mark Adamo’s Becoming Santa Claus (The Dallas Opera, world premiere); Britten’s Albert Herring (LA Opera, Santa Fe Opera) AND Humperdinck’s Königskinder (Teatro di San Carlo, Naples).

His awards include Premio Abbiati (Italy) for Königskinder and Helpmann Award (Australia) for Handel’s Faramondo (Brisbane Baroque Festival)
