Nicky is an international set and costume designer who trained at West Sussex and West Surrey Colleges of Art & Design. She works mainly in opera, but also in theatre, musical theatre and short film.
She has designed productions for many leading opera companies, both in the UK and extensively in Europe, as-well-as in South Korea, with numerous productions either winning or nominated for opera awards. She has been a judge for the Linbury Prize held at National Theatre, London, is on the committee of the Society of British Theatre Designers (SBTD) and mentors young designers.
For Opera Theatre Company she designed Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Grigory Frid’s The Diary of Anne Frank and Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea (all nominated for Best Opera, Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards) and Handel’s Alcina.
Notable work includes Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (Glyndebourne Festival and Tour), Handel’s Semele (Garsington Opera), Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking (Royal Danish Opera, winner Best Opera, Reumart Awards); Janáček’s Jenůfa (Royal Swedish Opera, Danish National Opera, Scottish Opera, winner The Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre, UK Theatre Awards); Rossi’s Orfeo (Royal Opera House at Sam Wanamaker Theatre); Massenet’s Don Quichotte (winner Audience Award and Best Production Award, Performing Arts Centre Aarhus and Stiftidende newspaper), Janáček’s Katya Kabanova (Danish National Opera), Verdi’s La traviata (Scottish Opera, joint winner The Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre, Thomas’s Mignon (Buxton Opera Festival, nominated for Best Opera, South Bank Sky Awards), and Eric Woolfson’s Dancing Shadows (Seoul Arts Center Opera House, winner Best Musical in Korea Musical Awards).
