Ben Barnes is a former artistic director of Opera Theatre Company and directed productions of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Bizet’s Carmen, Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Puccini’s La bohème over the years for them. Other opera productions include Mozart’s Idomeneo, La finta giardiniera, Così fan tutte and The Marriage of Figaro, Puccini’s Tosca, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Britten’s Albert Herring and Cavalli’s Ormindo. In 2014 he directed The Invader, a new opera by Eric Sweeney, and in 2019 will direct Vagabones , a new opera by Raymond Deane for Opera Collective Ireland with the Crash Ensemble. He makes his Irish National Opera debut with Madama Butterfly. He is a long-established international theatre director and has won several Irish Times Theatre Awards and Masque and MECCA awards in Ireland and Canada respectively for his work as a director. He directs regularly in the United States and elsewhere. He is a former artistic director of the Abbey Theatre and the author of Plays and Controversies, detailing his tenure at the national theatre from 2000-2005.
